The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering
Monterey Car Week
August 16, 2024

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering returned to Quail Lodge & Golf Club on Friday, August 16, 2024—an all-day garden party where the lawns become a curated cross-section of the car world. I timed my route to the cadence of the show: gates, grids, and the natural ebb of the crowd. Quail is deliberately intimate—limited entries, room to step back, and just enough space to let a shape breathe. In Monterey’s clean light, you can read surfaces like sculpture and catch the kinds of details that vanish at bigger venues. It remains the centerpiece of Car Week on Friday.
The entrance was grand, which made the first steps feel like a reveal. Hypercars set the early tone—Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Maseratis, and a Czinger holding court—before the path bent toward post-war greats (a pair of Jaguars catching the morning light) and a row that nodded to ’70s-era supercars: Espada alongside Pantera, long hoods and sharp creases sharing the same lawn. Porsche was everywhere, from early cars to modern GTs, with a through-line celebrating 50 years of the 911 Turbo threaded into displays and conversation. I moved close for badges and louvers, then wide to see how each car sat on the green.
What separates The Quail is its edit. With entries capped and classes tightly curated, every lineup feels intentional; the viewing lanes are part of the design. The result is a show that rewards both the lens and the casual stroll—Best of Show headlines, but the day belongs to the walk. Quail has become Monterey’s launchpad and meeting ground, the place where factory one-offs share space with coachbuilt specials and top-shelf restomods. It’s less a static display than a conversation staged on grass—history, performance, and craft, set to a soundtrack of clinking glasses and low idle across Carmel Valley.
